Thomas Hardy to make a comeback

Thomas Hardy Ale was first produced by Eldridge Pope in 1968 to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the death of the eponymous Dorset writer. Its annual releases in numbered bottles at 12%ABV became a highly sought-after laying down ale, badged at times as Britain's rarest ale. Supplies dried up in 1999 when Eldridge Pope withdrew from brewing only to be resurrected by O'Hanlon's in Devon in 2003. Six further vintages appeared but the costs of production were too high and the rights passed to two Italians: Sandra and Michele Vecchiato, owners of Brew Invest, who have interests the speciality beers sector. They have not declared where they intend to brew it.
