As we reported last month (HSB 427 p.2), a sixth company has been convicted of corporate manslaughter. The company was fined just ￡8,000, although one of its directors was fined ￡183,000 and disqualified as a director for five years for a breach of the HSW Act. In this legal casenote, we report on the sentencing remarks of Judge Guy Boney. The fatal incident occurred at the premises of Mobile Sweepers (Reading) on the Riddings Farm industrial estate at Headley in Berkshire. The victim, Malcolm Hinton, was killed when an unpropped hydraulic hopper of a Scarab road sweeper - one of the company's four machines - collapsed onto him while he was carrying out urgent repairs on the instruction of the company's principal director.
