Young apprentice was victim of corporate manslaughter

The death of a 16-year-old apprentice has ended with Huntley Mount Engineering ("Huntley"), the company with which he had been placed, being fined ￡150,000 for corporate manslaughter. The company's sole director received an immediate custodial sentence and its supervisor a suspended prison sentence, while the recruitment agency that placed the apprentice was also fined - all for HSW Act offences. A total of 13 companies have now been convicted of corporate manslaughter (including the CAV Aerospace case reported on p.9). As with most of the other offenders, Huntley was a small organisation, and the two most senior managers played a clear role in the commissioning of the offence.
