In June, we reported that magistrates and judges were imposing increasing numbers of custodial sentences for work-related health and safety failures (HSB 439 p.13). Since that issue, a further 20 individuals have received suspended or immediate sentences, all of which have been reported in this issue (see pp.5 and 9) and our previous two issues. In this feature, we cover three of the cases, involving a groundworks director, a demolition supervisor and a recycling director. HSB's records show that 164 individuals have now received immediate or suspended custodial sentences for offences related to health and safety at work (in addition to 51 for the common law offence of manslaughter). Of these 164 sentences, 103 have been handed down since November 2013, with just 61 in the preceding 38 years.
