Unregistered gas fitter sentenced to prison

A Leeds trader has been imprisoned for six months after his illegal gas work put a family at risk. The HSE found that the trader, Christopher Shaw, who operates under several aliases, had never been registered as a gas engineer, either with Gas Safe or its predecessor, Corgi. Together with two other prosecutions reported below, there have now been 36 immediate or suspended custodial sentences for gas safety offences since January 2013. The prosecution followed an HSE investigation into work that Shaw had carried out at a home in Leeds between February and August 2013. Using one of his aliases, Christopher Parker, he recommended the purchase of a new boiler after the existing appliance developed a fault, even though it was only three years' old. Shaw returned on several occasions to carry out repairs on the new boiler. Eventually, a registered gas engineer working for the boiler's manufacturer examined and disconnected the installation after classifying it as "at risk". The householder tried to contact Shaw several times, without any response.
