Selecting apples in confined space ends in manslaughter

The operations manager of a fruit farm has been imprisoned for two and a half years for the manslaughter of two young workers who were asphyxiated inside a controlled atmosphere unit containing apples. The manager, Andrew Stacker, is the 51~st person, according to HSB's records, to be imprisoned for gross negligence manslaughter in connection with a work-related activity. Although Stocker was abroad at the time of the fatal incident on 18 February 2013, he had himself practised, and encouraged others to carry out, the dangerous working method that led to the deaths. The incident occurred at the Blackmoor Estate in Liss, Hampshire. The estate, which is owned by Lord Selborne, a conservative peer, was fined ￡75,000 for failures uncovered during the investigation, but it was not alleged that the failures were causative of the deaths.
