Engineering firm fined for metalworking fluid exposures

A precision engineering company has been fined ￡20,000 and ordered to pay costs of ￡4,447 for failing to control the exposure of its employees to metalworking fluids, which exposed them to the result of developing dermatitis. The fine represents 0.7% of the company's most recent pre-tax profit. The exposures occurred between October 2017 and January 2019 during work on lathes and milling machines at the premises of Lymington Precision Engineers in the town of Lymington in the New Forest in Hampshire. The HSE found that Lymington Precision Engineers failed to ensure adequate measures were in place for the control of exposure to metalworking fluids, which lubricate and cool work pieces and are classed as a substance hazardous to health.
