Public health nursing is a complex and demanding role in which professional development is an integral part. NHS Fife's risk management team regularly deliver training courses on risk assessment for all levels of staff. Risk assessment is an important issue for public health nurses, but it may not be prioritised due to the multifaceted nature of the role.According to NMC standards of proficiency, public health nurses have a major role to play in protecting the public from risk.1 They appear to be ideally placed to identify potential or actual risks, particularly in relation to children under five years of age. Completing a risk assessment is certainly an example of good practice and one way that public health nurses can work proactively and make an impact on safeguarding children.
