The government has emphasised a need for a 'new politics' that sees engaging citizens as being critical to recovering the UK national debt. However, the White Paper Equity and excellence: liberating the NHS appears to realise previous concerns about commissioning by opening the NHS up to alternative providers. A need for public engagement and a new politics requires a debate about the expansion of the market economy into the NHS.
