Polish power consumption in 2009 fell 4% to 148,718 GWh from 154,891 GWh in 2008, the state-owned transmission system operator, PSE Operator, said January 18. Power production fell 3% year on year to 150,913 GWh from 155,575 GWh. Of that, 135,071 GWh, equivalent to around 90% of the total, was produced in coal-fired power plants, 84,274 GWh from hard coal-fired plants and 50,797 GWh from lignite-fired plants. The remaining 15,842 GWh were produced in plants producing power solely for industrial purposes (8,204 GWh), gas-fired plants (4,052 GWh), hydro (up 9% 2,751 GWh), wind power (up 22%) and renewable sources (up 76%). In 2009, Poland imported 2,195 GWh of power, up sharply from 684 GWh in 2008.
