State prioritises local coal

The government decided January 19 to designate the small national coal mining industry an issue of national economic interest and set quotas for its use in producing electricity from 2011-2020 with the prospect of a continued consumption obligation until 2035. The biggest impact of the decision will be to set electricity and coal consumption targets for Slovakia's biggest electricity producer Slovenske Elektrarne and in particular its Novaky coal-fired power plant.
