Realistic parents know that minor accidents, scrapes and bruises are an inevitable and normal part of a child's development. However, accidents are also a major health problem throughout the UK. They are the most common preventable cause of death in pre-school children, and leave many others permanently disabled or disfigured (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA),2016). The personal costs of an injury can be devastating: significant, lasting physical and emotional effects can impact on education and learning, employment opportunities and family relationships (Public Health England (PHE), 2014). Accidental injuries also place a large burden on the health service in terms of A&E attendance and hospital admission, as well as treatment and rehabilitation.
