Farmers drive their own development

In Guinea, farmers' organisations have proved themselves so strong and well organised that the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has decided to pioneer a radically new approach in its delivery of assistance. For the first time ever, IFAD funding is being channeled by a government directly to the farmers, to spend on development activities they have selected. The programme is still in the early stages, but its innovative methodology and results so far indicate that it may well provide an important blueprint for future interventions of this kind.
