Higher prices boost Vale's base metals earnings

Higher copper, nickel and cobalt prices helped Vale's base metals division achieve a 44% year-on-year increase in its adjusted earnings in the fourth quarter of 2017, the Brazilian miner said on Tuesday February 27.Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (Ebitda) came to $782 million in the three months ended in December 31. This compares with $543 million a year earlier and $561 million in the preceding quarter.
