Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss: Beyond the window and tinnitus, too? An editorial perspective

In this issue of UHM, there are two studies on the use of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy for idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL). Both studies bring intriguing viewpoints regarding this newest hyperbaric medicine indication. Their inclusion here presents an opportunity for editorial and historical perspective. Physicians have been evaluating the use of HBO_2 for hearing loss since the 1960s [1]. Literature searches reveal more than 100 published studies. HBO2 has been used to investigate both the pathogenesis of ISSHL and the rationale for HBO2 use. Treatment studies have evaluated oral and intratympanic steroids, medical mono- or polytherapy with or without HBO2, and HBO2 use following medical therapy failures. Both acute and chronic hearing loss have been investigated, as well as the usefulness of HBO_2 for the additional symptoms of tinnitus and vertigo.
