Dancing with sex hormones, could iron contribute to the gender difference in osteoporosis?

The primary focus of this article concerned the consequences of exposure of adipocytes to the corticosteroid dexamethasone and the potential paracrine effect on osteoblasts. With the exposure of adipocytes to dexamethasone, we observed decreased function and increased apoptosis of the co-cultured osteoblasts, which were associated with increases of leptin, stearate, and palmitate in the supernatants as compared with the supernatants from adipocytes without exposure to dexamethasone. The mechanisms that are involved remain to be defined.
