As the refining industry is one of the largest consumers of hydrogen—with estimates diat the sector made up 30-35% of global hydrogen demand, which amounted to 32MM mt/y, in 2020—-UK consultancy Wood Mackenzie expects that low-carbon hydrogen, including "green" (renewable-based) hydrogen and "blue" hydrogen (fossil-fuel-based hydrogen production with carbon capture), could provide 50MM mt/y of the industry's hydrogen requirements by 2050. However, because 65% of the hydrogen consumed by refineries is from byproduct, hydrogen produced via on-purpose routes only fulfills 32% of overall hydrogen demand.
