"Every single time I recognize the sound of a combustion-powered car coming past my house today, it's an older Porsche or a Ferrari". When I was a boy growing up in a small country town in Australia, I could tell which neighbors were going where without leaving my bedroom. The ANZ bank manager, for example, drove a light blue Holden VK Commodore with a sticking tappet. I could hear him accelerate away from his house near the golf club then slow down for the railway crossing, hear the tires slap on the iron rails, then hear the tick-tick-ticking all the way down Francis Street.
