The princioles of modern arboriculture: sound philosophy, better practice

When considering any major intervention in tree structure and physiology, it is worth considering the strength of the philosophical position that forms basis of modern arboricultural practices (Shigo 1989; Harris 1992). For several decades, the philosophy considered most appropriate in dealing with arboriculture has been based on an improved understanding of tree biology, which can be encapsulated in the principles of modern arboriculture.
