Strains of microorganisms transforming acrylonitrile and acrylamide to acrylic acid were selected. Selection of these strains was performed by methods of entrichment culture and direct inoculation from soil samples taken from the site of acrylonitrile production. Alcaligenes sp. and Pseudomonas sp. were the most potent strains. The cells of Alcaligenes sp. stain Ib-1 VKPM B-5736 probably contain nitrilase that act preferentially on aliphatic nitriles. Acrylic acid at a concentration of 11.5% was obtained by using this strain.
