MAIN RESULTS OF FORESTRY ACTIVITIES IN UKRAINE IN 1946-2002

The article is devoted to the development of forestry industry in Ukraine for the last 56 years. The total area of forests in Ukraine has augmented by 2,597 ths. ha while forest yield increased by 1,002.6 mn cub. meters over this period of time. Average annual accretion of wood makes in general 35 mn cub. meters. Use of average accretion herewith constitutes merely 34 percent. Meanwhile, cases of voluntary woodcutting have become more frequent in the country lately. At the same time, general trashing of forests has grown. The article also considers economic results of industry development. In particular, significant number of Ukrainian forestries became profitable in the late nineties. The total earnings of the industry's companies reached USD 13.5 mn in 2000, while the cost of fixed assets made USD 130.9 mn. Investments to the development of forestries constituted USD 18.2 mn including USD 6.5 mn of foreign capital.
