TotalEnergies' annual shareholders' meeting in May may prove to be something of an ordeal for CEO Patrick Pouyanne. A growing number of shareholders have serious doubts about the development of the Tilenga project in the Lake Albert basin. Any future oil extracted from the site, which is partly located in a fragile ecosystem within the protected Murchison Falls National Park, will have to be transported via a 1,600km pipeline to the Tanzanian port of Tanga. The pipeline will need to be electrically heated to prevent the oil from solidifying, as its composition enables crude to turn to wax if the temperature is too low.
