Perimeter protection and intrusion detection systems and methods have become essential parts of most security and surveillance systems. From applications, such as border protection, through airport security, to equipment protection in vital plants, and so on, perimeter intrusion detection systems (PIDS) have penetrated a significantly large number of verticals. Of the core detection technologies that are currently used in these PIDS systems; taut wire, vibration sensors, microphonic sensors, microwave sensors, seismic sensors, and so on, have been the traditional solutions. However, optical fiber-based PIDS have gained popularity, being fully passive systems that may not require power supplies or electronics in the field (the electronics can be remote from the sensor), and having electromagnetic field immunity. In addition, there is always a demand from the market to make PIDS solutions more robust, foolproof, and less prone to false alarms. Especially in the protection of critical infrastructure and high-security areas, it is essential that advances to PIDS systems include more accurate measurements.
