Bavarian Hatchery and Fishery-Training Centre Celebrates 25 Busy Years

In the late 1970s the regional parliament of the county of Oberfranken in north-east Bavaria decided to reactivate a long tradition. Historically the Earls of Coburg & Gotha had founded the first trout hatchery to restock game-fishing rivers and table-fish ponds before 1867 and the Franciscan-monks of the Abbey of Marienweiher had domesticated Loch Leven - brown trout in their ponds before 1886. The modern Regional Parliament completed their Fishery-Con suiting-Board by establishing a training school and an experimental salmonid hatchery in the village of Aufsess near the headwaters of the River Wiesent in the Franconian Jura. This river has been an international favourite of fly fishermen for nearly two centuries).
