Live Haulage Of Freshwater Prawns Presents Challenges

Commercial production of freshwater prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) in the lower United States is beginning to emerge as a viable option for the regions farmers. To be competitive, the industry has had to overcome a series of challenges, such as having only a few hatcheries to provide seed, and a short growing season. Now, a group of Kentucky State University scientists have published an overview of recent R&D in growing freshwater prawns* that claims a number of those hurdles have been overcome.Even with a growout period of only 110 days, harvest densities of 1,500-2,000 kg/ha (1,340-1780 Ibs/acre) have been achieved, and in some instances, production of 40g animals approached 3,000 kg/ha (2680 Ibs/ acre).
