One of the world's few producers of farm-raised chinook salmon has established a visionary breeding program that involves a demanding hatchery regime and 90 family lines. The genesis of New Zealand King Salmon goes back to 1996 when two struggling companies, South Ocean Seafoods and Regal Salmon, amalgamated their resources. They now spawn, growout, process and market 6,000 tonnes of chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshaiuytschd) annually. The operation, based in the South Island, has two hatcheries andfive marine growout sites and is one of the largest aquaculture operations in New Zealand.
