Proper feed management is increasingly recognized as one the most important aspects of fish farming. But a recent conference of the Asian aquaculrure industry was told that all too often hatchery producers get blamed when things don't go well during growout. According to Lukas Manomaitis, technical director of aquaculture for the southeast Asia region of the American Soybean Association's International Marketing Program (ASAIM), too frequently growout fish farmers go into business without sufficienttraining and knowledge. When they encounter poor performance or low growth rates among their fingerlings, they generally blame one of two things. They either attribute it to the hatchery that sold them the fingerlings, thinking lower than expected performance is due to the poor quality of the fish they received, Or they blame the feed manufacturer.
