Producers face range of options when selecting tilapia stock

Tilapia is a diverse group of over 100 species. Surprisingly only a handful of species are cultured commercially and of this handful, one species, the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) accounts for 95% of global production. Tilapia farms range from small backyard operations producing enough fish for a small family, to huge agro-industrial units producing over 10,000 MT annually.
