Compilation of studies examines conflicts between wild and hatchery-bred Pacific salmon. The Pacific Ocean is teeming with hatchery-reared salmon, and a compilation of 23 peer-reviewed studies by leading scientists from US universities and governmentfishery labs provides new evidence that those salmon are damaging wild salmon stocks by competing for food and habitat. The research is published in the May issue of Environmental Biology of Fishes. It pulls together findings from independent studies ofPacific Salmon conducted across their entire range. A statement from the Wild Salmon Center in Portland, Oregon says that the collection includes the first studies to describe the alleged effects of hatcheries on wild salmon populations in Japan and Russia.
