Underwater ultrasound used to test catfish for ripeness

In a recent study researchers at Louisiana State University's Agriculture Center's aquaculture unit found that ultrasound imaging can be used to view the ovaries of channel catfish while the fish being examined is fully submerged in water and in an upright swimming position. The study illustrated minimally stressful procedures for the ultrasound imaging of the ovaries of catfish in ventral recumbency (upright swimming position) without using a physical restraint within the tank system, and the process is now being tested by researchers in commercial catfish farming applications.
