It is now well known that biofloc production can offer important benefits in limited or zero water exchange culture systems, and can be used in super intensive shrimp (and tilapia) culture to promote biofiltration and provide nutritional supplementation. However, biofloc systems are not completely reliable, and need to be managed in a sustainable manner. Too much biofloc in a system is difficult to keep suspended, and settling causes anaerobic pockets with the potential for producing toxic hydrogen sulfide.
