The pervasive influence of conflicts of interest: a personal perspective.

We applaud Dr. Martin1 for tackling the complex issues surrounding conflicts of interest. Academic neurologists are educators as well as physicians and many are uncomfortable using a pharmaceutical company slide deck for educational programs. As the pharmaceutical industry becomes more regulated, faculty members are expected to use unedited company slides. As Dr. Martin points out, there are numerous reasons behind this, and "whether and to what extent marketing efforts should and can be separated from educational content will undoubtedly be the grist for future discussions."
