Although the first reported death from the outbreak of coronavirus (Covid-19) occurred just prior to scrap prices dropping sharply over consecutive weeks, it was the fragility of underlying steel demand in many steel markets that undermined scrap demand and prices. This was compounded by a mild winter in the US and northern Europe, which meant that more supply was available than is typical for this time of year.
