NE, NNSA MAY ASK NAT'L ACADEMY TO STUDY NONPROLIFERATION, FUEL CYCLES

The Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration are hoping to work together to analyze the proliferation risks of different nuclear fuel cycles, according to DOE officials. Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy Pete Miller said last week that he wants to have a way to compare the proliferation risk of different fuel cycles-and that NE and NNSA are hoping the National Academy of Sciences will be able to help with a study of how to measure such risk. "We are talking to them about issues related to proliferation risk," Miller said during remarks to the Nuclear Energy Advisory Committee Dec. 18. "How do you quantify proliferation risk, what is the lens through which NNSA looks at the issue and how can we respect and know each other's point of view?"
