Researchers from the Danish Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries have proposed that the fatty acid profile of some species of pine nut may be connected to experiences of "pine mouth". The condition, which was first reported in 2001, relates to a metallic taste in the mouth (and occasionally abdominal disturbances) after consumption of pine nuts, which persists for up to two weeks. Anecdotal reports have increased in the last couple of years, and it has been speculated that the problem has arisen due to poor storage of the nuts, which are prone to rancidity.
