The first nanometal viz gold nano particle dates back to the fifth century. The first systematic procedure for incorporation gold into molten silica producing ruby glass was followed by several historical strides in this field. This book reviews recent advances in nanoscopic metal particle synthesis, theory of optical properties and applications in optical composite materials and electronic devices. The discussions begin with bulk solution phase synthesis of metal clusters and the influence of anionic ligands on their size and properties. This is followed by a discussion on the concept of magic numbers, which pertain to the number of atoms in a cluster that nature prefers. Chapter 4 reviews the theory of optical properties of metal nano particles. The electrochemical template synthesis method for metal nano particles is described in the next chapter. A review of recent work on hyper-Rayleigh scattering that provides insight into the symmetry of nano particles assemblies in solution is discussed in chapter 6. Electrochemical synthesis of rod like gold nano particles in surfactant solutions along with the theory of optical spectra are discussed in the next chapter. Chapter 8 describes application of self assembled colloidal gold films and surface plasmom effects to bioanalytical chemistry.
