Costa Rica's Commercial Code (Codigo de Comercio) governs all matters concerning commercial enterprises. Although foreigners have full freedom to acquire and/or operate a business in Costa Rica, they must have ten years of legal residency before conducting business in their own name. The usual alternative is to conduct business through a corporation legally formed and registered in Costa Rica.
