The nascent percutaneous coronary intervention with bioresorbable scaffolds (BRS) has a number of potential advantages over current metallic stents, secondary to the complete degradation that occurs months to years after implantation. Following BRS implantation, late restoration of the vessel vasomotor tone and lumi-nal enlargement would occur at the treated segment. Also, in theory, BRS would be associated with a decrease in the risk of late thrombosis, would hamper the (neo)-atherosclerotic process, and would allow percutaneous/surgical revascularization of the target segment. Conversely, several issues of the novel technology are yet to be clarified and better understood. Because of the peculiar mechanical properties of BRS (Table I), specific interventional strategies have been recommended for the novel devices, posing an important shift in the way interventionalists implant current drug-eluting stents. However, little is known about the acute effects following BRS deployment, particularly in regular patients treated in the so-called real world.
