We are interested in the bottom-up design,construction and investigation of chemical systems, encompaSSing molecules, supramolecular systems, and nanostructured materials,that behaveinaninteresting, potentially useful manner in response to externalstimuli. In this context, light is amost attractive stimulus because it can be used both to “write” and “read” matter,itcan be finely tuned in energy,time and space do- mains,and it can cause clean reactions. Akey objective of our activity is the development of light-driven molecular switches, machines, and motors. these studies are focusedonfunda- mental science, and are motivated by the search for innovative solutionstopractical problemsinchemosensing, molecular de- livery,catalysis, energy conversion and storage, and mechanical actuation atdifferent length scales.
