Information overload. The term was popularized by Alvin Toffter in his 1970 best-seller, "Future Shock," but the concept may be traced back to the 18th century French philosopher Diderot.But Diderot was not the first to lament the challenges we humans face as a result of the increasing knowledge and documentation of facts, fiction, and fables about the world we inhabit (as well as the world we are able to imagine). In Phaedrus, Socrates warned that the very invention of books "creates forgetful-ness" in our souls.Technology rolls on: books, the printing press, "the speed of transmission ... of telegrams," radio, television, computers, the Internet ... ?
