Dear Reader, The failures that led two Boeing 737 Max 8 jets to plunge from the sky killing all onboard should be instructive ?to autonomous vehicle developers. In both planes, incorrect readings from one of two angle of attack sensors ?caused the automated safety system ?to engage, sharply pitching each plane toward the ground. Software glitches factored into both crashes. The pilots couldn’t manually overcome ?the autonomous system. Threehundred- and-forty-six people were killed. As a result, the Max 8 has been grounded for nearly a year, Boeing’s valuation dropped 55 billion US dollars, and its CEO was forced to resign.
