Electric vehicles produced by different manufacturers typically differ in terms of their inverters and the power electronics the inverters contain. This key distinction also often applies to the different vehicle performance classes. Up until now, silicon IGBTs paired with fly-back diodes have been the power semiconductors of choice, even in the high-performance class, because silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductors have been too expensive to manufacture.
