Optimizing Over-the-Air Tests with Antenna Measurements plus Full-wave Simulation

The combination of measurements with numerical calculations is forward-looking, and the extended measurement or extended simulation approach offers multiple advantages: Numerical computation can be made more realistic, as no a-priori and in-depth knowledge about the DUT details is required. Calculations also become more efficient – by a factor of 12 in speed and 10 in memory in the studied use case – as much of the complexity in modelling the radiating source is then removed. Measurements can be made more cost and time effective. In the studied case, a highly expensive fullvehicle OTA facility can be replaced with a 1.3 m2 spherical scanning chamber. The next step will involve similar investigations with active devices transmitting modulated signals. The focus will then be on a systematic evaluation of the uncertainty factors.
