The software-defined Vehicle Is Overwhelming the Automotive Industry

A software-defined vehicle redefines both the value of a vehicle and also the market value for manufacturer and supplier via the software quality, the resilience of the ecosystem, and the brand experience. Value creation in mobility is shifting toward the software development domain so rapidly that neither OEM nor supplier are really prepared for it. It is a shift in which software development needs to be considered on an industrial scale, similar to a factory product, in order to maintain the next 300 million lines of code in modern vehicles; the key phrase here is software factory. It is a shift in which an over-the-air update capability becomes the key to almost all digital value creation in a vehicle - and a shift in which processes and technologies that render the complexity of development manageable also become success factors: software testing using artificial intelligence, robotic process automation, and more. These are topics that are often forgotten in the current visions of digitization - or do not stand up to the expectations users later place on their product.
