Possibilities for the Electrification of Heavy Commercial Vehicles

Battery, fuel cell, or both concepts in parallel - unlike in passenger cars, no main solution that is equally suitable for all segments and transportation tasks has yet established itself for future alternative powertrains for heavy commercial vehicles. Accordingly, both systems are currently being developed to series maturity, as can be shown by a brief look at the activities of some commercial vehicle manufacturers. In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, truck manufacturers must cut the CO_2 emissions of their fleets in the EU by 15% by the year 2025 and even by 30% by 2030, otherwise they will face severe penalty payments. And for 2050, the EU would like to achieve a 90-% reduction in carbon emissions in the transportation sector. By then at the latest, truck manufacturers will probably have to say goodbye to the traditional diesel engine as the power source for their products for the European market. Electric powertrains with a battery or a hydrogen-powered fuel cell are considered to be the most marketable alternatives in the long term. While battery-electric powertrains are becoming more and more popular in passenger cars and are establishing themselves as the virtual standard of tomorrow, the question of the future concept for commercial vehicles is still open.
