I was concerned to note that the Archives reported no financial conflicts of interest for Bertram Pitt, MD, in regard to his recent Invited Commentary to the article "Comparative Effectiveness of beta-Blockers in Elderly Patients With Heart Failure." Dr Pitt's expertise in the area is obvious in his well reasoned and insightful commentary. However, it is clear that he has conflicts of interest in regard to the cardiovascular drugs in general and beta-blockers in particular. For example, within the past month, he has disclosed his consulting relationship with Pfizer, Novartis, Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, AstraZeneca, and Merck in the context of an article in the New England Journal of Medicine.
