Despite efforts by national medical organizations and health agencies to reduce race/ethnic disparities in CHD, CHD mortality in black Americans remains significantly higher than that in white Americans.1 From a historical perspective, our country has come a long way from slavery, the Jim Crow era, and the civil rights struggle to the election of a US President who is black (or of mixed race/ethnic background, depending on the side of the social, scientific, or so called postracial debate that you might identify with).
