Hypoglycaemia associated with gastrointestinal andextragastrointestinal stromal tumour in two dogs

Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) are uncommonmesenchymal tumours that originate from the interstitialcells of Cajal. As these tumours are difficult to distinguishfrom gastrointestinal smooth muscle tumours usingstandard histological techniques, their true prevalencemay be underestimated. Metabolic and systemicconsequences of GISTs are not well described in anyspecies. More rarely, neoplasms with histological andimmunohistochemical features similar to GISTs mayoccur outside the gastrointestinal tract, the so-calledextragastrointestinal stromal tumours (EGIST). EGISTshave never been described in the veterinary literature.In this article the authors present and describe clinicalfindings, management and treatment of two dogswith clinical hypoglycaemia induced by histologicallyconfirmed GIST and EGIST. Hypoglycaemia resolvedimmediately and long term after tumour excision.To the authors’ knowledge this is the first report ofhypoglycaemia associated with a canine GIST and thefirst case report of an EGIST in a dog.
