Rehabilitation treatment for long-term associatedfemoral head ostectomy muscle atrophy

Rehabilitation after femoral head ostectomy (FHO) isrecommended on awakening from anaesthesia. Thisreport summarises the effects of delayed rehabilitation ina Yorkshire terrier and two toy poodles who underwentrehabilitation beginning at 1month, 3 months and 9years after FHO surgery, in cases where rehabilitationwas impossible immediately after surgery. Rehabilitationwas conducted once per week for approximately 3 hoursat our facility; we focused on underwater therapy andinclined walking. The results in the dog that underwentrehabilitation 9 years after surgery showed a poorincrease in femoral muscle perimeter; in all three cases,improvement in gait was observed. If rehabilitationbegins with a long delay after surgery, the end ofrehabilitation will be similarly delayed. Nevertheless, theeffects of rehabilitation were evident in these cases.
