Chronic lameness associated with congenitalhypothyroidism in threedogs

A 4-month-old female entire Saint Bernard, a10-month-old female spayed Great Dane and a5-year-old male neutered Miniature Schnauzer crosspoodle were presented with the primary complaintof chronic lameness. Subjectively, all three dogs weredisproportionate dwarfs. Epiphysial dysgenesis wasidentified on survey radiographs in all three cases, alongwith varying degrees of secondary osteoarthrosis. Lowserum thyroxine, in conjunction with low-to-normalthyroid stimulating hormone concentration, and thepresence of epiphysial dysgenesis, served to confirmcongenital hypothyroidism. Following commencement ofsynthetic thyroid hormone supplementation, resolutionof clinical signs was noted within a 1-month period.Improvement in radiographic abnormalities was also seenover a 6-month period.
